Having pictures or keywords gives the audience something to support the speakers words. Hopefully I am not the only one and that is in fact a common pitfall. Often, when too many words are on a slide, I tend to get lost in translation between the slides and the speaker. I think it was the most useful when a speaker presented with a clear artifact and then continued the presentation with a powerpoint filled with more pictures/keywords. This paired with projection and inflection of voice definitely keeps the attention of the audience. Besides these, it is effective when students have practiced their speeches enough times to make the delivery extemporaneous. In the same way, a proper ending gives an extra oomph to the speech. If the speaker starts off with an enticing hook, I immediately want to keep listening.
Successful elements: The main elements that make the speech more wholesome are the introductions and conclusions.
I specifically enjoyed learning about the One World Futbol that is indestructible for children of developing countries- very out of the box. I would be unaware of some of the unique ones if students did not present them to the class. It has been interesting to learn of the variety of civic artifacts. I have not presented my own speech but I have enjoyed watching the other speeches.
